INDU VARMA

Born and brought up in India, Indu immigrated to Canada in 1969. During a teaching career of 37 years Indu received various prestigious awards for excellence and innovation in teaching, such as, Governor General’s Award for excellence in teaching Canadian history. She served as the President of the New Brunswick Teachers’ Association (2005-07).
After retirement, she obtained her visual arts degree from the Université de Moncton (2016). Indu is a multimedia artist based in Sackville, New Brunswick. She paints, creates ceramic sculptures, and does printmaking. She uses a variety of styles and techniques in her work. Her Indian heritage and culture are an integral part of her art. Her spiritual consciousness propels her to create art that uplifts and inspires the viewers. Her art practice is influenced by various artists and ceramists, such as, Jean-Paul Riopelle, Degas, Matisse, Rodin, Satoru Hoshino and Kristna Bogdanov.
In 2021, she received a Canada Council for the Arts grant, which allowed her to create a public art installation that depicts the history of Sackville on ceramic tiles. ‘Sackville: A Visual Snapshot’ was installed on December 6, 2022, at the entrance of the Sackville Town Hall.
