Webinar Description<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Power tools. Oily rags. Solvents, pigments, aerosol paints\u2026 The materials and equipment that artists use often pose some level of safety risk. This webinar will help identify hazards that are common in visual art studios and present strategies that artists can implement to protect their health and safety. We will discuss how to educate yourself about hazardous products, how to use a hierarchy of controls to reduce risk, the role of prevention and maintenance, and other best practices. Participants will leave with a studio safety checklist and a series of actionable tips for prioritizing health and safety in whatever space their practice occupies. At CARFAC, we want artists to stay healthy and safe so they can continue making their work well into the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andrea deBruijn <\/strong>is a professional visual artist based in Sackville, NB. She works as the Printmaking Technician at Mount Allison University, where a key part of her role includes assessing, improving, and promoting safe studio practices and policies. Since 2020, she has served as an active member of the MTA Fine Arts and Sciences Joint Health and Safety committee (FAS-JHSC), a committee whose mandate is to address the unique safety hazards present in art studio spaces and science labs. Andrea maintains training in WHMIS, first aid, CPR, and fire extinguisher use. A proud health and safety advocate, she recently established a campus First Aid Club in collaboration with the FAS-JHSC and the university\u2019s Department of People and Culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
